School compsition books and diaries collection Bulk, 1880-1901 1849-1901

This collection contains school composition books and diaries dating from 1849 to 1901 and belonging to various Brooklyn residents, including Maggie E. Briggs (a student at Packer Collegiate Institute), H.W. Condit, Maude DeForest-Winder, L.P. Nostrand, and Kate St. John-Reynolds. The books and diaries contain students' homework assignments, mathematical and grammatical exercises, clippings, and various notes and drawings. Also included is one housekeeping account book. The collection was artificially compiled from various sources by library staff at the Long Island Historical Society (later the Brooklyn Historical Society).

The Packer Collegiate Institute was incorporated in 1845 as the Brooklyn Female Academy, an institution devoted solely to female education. The Academy opened in 1846 in a building on Joralemon Street between Court and Clinton Streets in the present-day neighborhood of Brooklyn Heights.
